New York Knicks vs. Brooklyn Nets Betting Preview

*Breaking News: The Knicks vs. Nets Game on Thursday is now Cancelled*

The Brooklyn Nets home opener against the New York Knicks on Thursday night is still going to happen despite the devastation that the east coast had earlier this week from Hurricane Sandy. I for one can’t wait to watch this Brooklyn Nets team in action.

Will the Nets Win Their Home Opener Against the Knicks?

I know Brooklyn can’t wait to watch their Nets in action in a meaningful game as well. Brooklyn was able to bring in Joe Johnson and sign Deron Williams this off-season, but unfortunately we won’t get to see Dwight Howard in the line-up, as he’s a Laker.

With Howard not signing with the Nets they went out and resigned Gerald Wallace, Kris Humphries and Brook Lopez. The Nets have one of the top starting 5’s in the NBA, but they lack depth on the bench. I expect the big men on the bench to struggle.

The New York Knicks come into the 2012-13 season with a lot of new role players. Carmelo Anthony and Tyson Chandler will have to lead this team by themselves the first few weeks of the season to stay afloat due to an injury to Amar’e Stoudemire.

Iman Shumpert is also injured to start the season for the Knicks, but that isn’t a huge concern. The Knicks backcourt is deep with Raymond Felton, Ronnie Brewer, Jason Kidd and J.R. Smith although Smith currently isn’t happy coming off the bench this year.

Last year’s Nets went just 22-44, but anything close to that this season would be a huge disappointment. Joe Johnson is a player that’s typically good for 30+ minutes and +/- 20 points per game. Wallace should also contribute on both ends of the court.

Last year the Nets averaged 93.1 PPG compared to the Knicks who averaged 96.8 PPG offensively. Defensively these two teams will be stronger due to strengthening up their benches. In 2011-12 the Nets gave up 99.1 PPG and the Knicks allowed 94.8 PPG.

The key in this game is shutting down Chandler for the Nets, as Stoudemire is out. Lopez has had trouble defending so far during the preseason, but with Stoudemire out Humphries will be able to assist down low while defending.

Knicks vs. Nets Predictions

Brooklyn Nets -4.5 (-110)

The early Vegas line has the Nets as a -4.5 point favourite and I think they’ll cover easily. Stoudemire is out of the line-up and the big presence down low of the Nets should be able to score at will with just Chandler clogging up the middle.
