Predictions to Win Group D at Euro 2012

by faststeady

No powerhouse teams are in Group D at Euro 2012 and many expect this group to be wide open. France is a small favourite to win Group D, but England isn’t far behind in the betting markets. England is ranked #5 (UEFA) while France is ranked #12. Even the Sweden team has a higher UEFA coefficient rank than France (#9). Ukraine rounds up Group D at Euro 2012.

Euro 2012 Group D Predictions

France is the favourite in Group D, but I think three teams have a shot at winning the group. France went 6-3-1 during Euro 2012 qualification thanks to very tough defence. France only allowed 0.4 goals per game while scoring 1.5 goals on average. France doesn’t have the most potent attack at Euro 2012, but the French always seem to rise up to the occasion on the big stage.

England was the favourite to win Group D at one point, but action has been coming in on France lately. England may not even get past the knockout phase and I’m predicting they don’t. Wayne Rooney is suspended for two games, which means he’ll miss the two biggest group stage games for England against France and Sweden.

Without Rooney up front the English squad is going to struggle to find goals. The good news is that England has Joe Hart in net and they also have one of the best lines of defence in the tournament. England has a knack for struggling on the big stage and I like a tough team like Sweden has what it takes to upset the English team.

Sweden went 8-0-2 during qualifying and looked great. They scored 3.1 goals per game, but they did allow 1.1 goals per game as well, which is easily the highest in this group. Sweden beat the Netherlands during qualifying and while that game didn’t count for anything it had to have boosted Sweden’s confidence heading into Euro 2012.

Ukraine didn’t have to qualify since they’re a co-host at Euro 2012. Ukraine will play their hearts out in front of their country, but they don’t have the talent to keep up with the other three teams. Ukraine is in need of rebuilding, but at Euro 2012 many of the veterans on the national team will get a chance to play one last time in front of their country’s football fans.

My predictions for Group D are that France will win the group and Sweden will win runner-ups to advance. England is going to have a hard time replacing Rooney in the first two games and I think the Swedes will capitalize. Sweden doesn’t have much star power, but they do have Zlatan Ibrahimovic who netted 5 goals during qualifying to lead the Swedish team.

My Pick to Win – France 2.68

My Pick to Advance – Sweden 3.14
